My opinion is that, martial arts were originally concerned with preparing men for battle, while dance was a social activity.
Also, Martial arts involve intellectual concepts as well as physical techniques, which have been influenced by many of the religious and philosophical systems of the East. While Ballet and Modern dance come from a western culture.

Today, they no longer have a military role, but still retain an aggressive element. Dance can be aggressive or not.

Capoeira is a fight dance so it has relationship with is East counterpart, So yes you are right they are closer.

If I think about something else I come back :-)

I also did both (I still dance, I no loger do martial arts). Although both require precise and controlled movement, they have little to do with each other. There are so many differences that it's easier to list similarities. Main objective of martial arts is to be able to fight effectively when necesary. Main objective of dance is to look good.

One big thing in common is learning how to use your body. Also, in both cases you're trying to impress your audience with the way you move. Also, you have kata in martial arts that look like choreographed routine. The purpose is similar to that of a training routine in dance - learning to connect the moves.

martial arts are one of the best ways to cross train for dance. you gain strength, flexibility, muscle control, focus, discipline. all things you need for dance.
