that people who live in a Democracy state opinions in a political group to the extreme that they would never otherwise say in polite company. Was he right?

Well obviously Ann, Rush, O'Reilly and a few others didn't get the memo on this.

After giving it some thought, though I'd have to agree. When I'm in a group with similar beliefs to mine we go full throttle, when I'm in mixed company, I play it closer to the vest.

I would disagree because our politics are very moderated compared to the extremes found in other societies. We do not have a viable neo-fascist movement like the French and Italians or a viable communist movement like the Germans and Italians. We have two parties that are very similar and not extreme.
