When I was younger on of the first books to have a lasting impact in my life was "The Old Man and The Sea" by Hemingway. It was a required school reading but I have always remembered the story and the visual details associated with. I love the simpleness of the story. The old man with his courage and toughness has inspire my life.
I have since read several other great books. I have always had a great love for books. Reading is the greatest skill one can have. It really is hard to chose just one book.

that is always changing as I grow up, my interests change etc.
I will say that some of the best book I can remember reading in my late teens and early twenties were actually the books I was supposed to have read in highschool english. Back then I wasn't a reader, and skimmed or did the coles notes jobbies.
To kill a mockingbird
Fifth business
great gatsby
Catcher in the rye
the Chrystalids
everyone of them a fantastic, fantastic book

I cannot possibly answer this without some explanation...
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: BRILLIANT. Funny, satirical, spans generations... intelligent. I cannot say anything bad about the writing of this book... not a single thing.
Frankenstein (Shelley): the mystery surrounding the making of this story is brilliant. its adds to the allure.
Collected Tales by Edgar Allan Poe: This man is a genius... he truly made writing an art, and perfected its form... He knows how to captivate and disgust at the same time.

I have read many, many books and each one has left a special mark in my heart forever.
One of the best books I read at the age of 13, and which I have read again and again, was Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It certainly left a lasting place in my heart.
