sorry, you have to be 21 to own a handgun. If this is your first gun, or you aren't very experienced, stay away from pistols and go with a small revolver instead. No jams, very simple to use. I'd suggest something in .38 calibur with T.A.P. or similar hollow point ammunition and a 2" barrel. Then go thru a weapons class.
Check your local laws regarding pepper spray or a taser for a 17 year old to use. Some states say it's OK, and some don't.
I'm glad to see your concerned with protecting yourself. I wish more people were. Good luck, and I hope you never have to use a weapon to defend yourself.

If you can, then I am moving to SC. Seriously, no I don't think you can. Most states require you to be 21 in order to buy the pistol in the first place and 18 to have possession of a pistol owned by someone else (with their permission of course). I have no idea why you feel you need such an extreme form of protection, but my suggestion is MACE or pepper spray.
To answer your original question, when you are old enough to buy one I would strongly suggest a Glock...expensive, but well worth the $$$.

I disagree with Gregg to an quantity. collectively as you're able to have a weapon which you prepare with lots and don't thoughts scratching up, there is not any longer something incorrect with a showpiece on your series. as an example, i exploit a .40 high quality Glock 23 as my beat up gun. I actually have a conversion barrel for 9mm for it besides, which supplies me thoughts, plus a TLR-one million easy via Streamlight that attaches under the barrel to be used at night. yet for something of my series, i like to purchase issues i like. i latterly had a custom 1911 that I bought that replaced into very fairly. The 1911 has a great fan base whilst it involves cosmetically superb pistols. I bought it to p.c.. up a Sig Sauer P228 pistol made entirely in West Germany. Its have been given the black Nitron end and Nickel controls (set off, Hammer, Decocker, Slide end, Takedown Lever, mag launch). Its even have been given Tritium night factors of interest, which use a small little bit of nuclear waste with a one million/2 existence of approximately 12-15 years to furnish a vivid eco-friendly glow in dark aspects without ever wanting to be uncovered to easy with the intention to glow. My suggestion is that if sturdy seems are as significant as function on your handgun purchase, your terrific bets are right here: A intense-end 1911 which incorporate an Ed Brown, Wilson, or between the intense end Springfields or Kimbers. A Sig Sauer pistol, a P220, a P226, P228, P229, or P239. the 1st 4 in this checklist all have tactical rails on them for attaching lasers and flashlights, the final one has a extra classic charm and no rail. And final yet no longer least, there is often the Beretta 92FS. it is the pistol our troops are at the instant utilising interior the middle east, yet under the call "M9" exact via the militia. Its no longer the main sturdy and sturdy pistol obtainable and is only a 9mm, yet its easily a chew of elegance, and there are a sturdy style of thoughts obtainable for customizing it and making it look even nicer. in case you may get your palms on an older Beretta 92F made entirely in Italy from earlier they have been replaced with the FS, you would be wanting your self a heck of a reasonably pistol. additionally, whilst you're no longer partial to automatics, you are able to consistently pass with a revolver. The Colt Python is not any longer made, yet once you may get your palms on an older one in sturdy circumstance its an exceptionally appealing pistol.

you have to get a license to conceal. That is totally different then just buying a gun. If you are caught carrying that without a license you are talking big time problems

Water pistols are pretty safe for kids. If you want protection, learn martial arts (with benefit of getting fit) and carry mace/taser. The chances are greater that you or someone you love will be injured by your gun than an assailant.

If someone attacks you, tries to rob you, etc., do they ask you if you're ready to be attacked?
Or do they just jump you?
My suggesting would be to pick whatever gun you'd ultimately like to be shot with cause the chances are that's what will happen.
I'd go small caliber unless you want your gun to most likely kill you rather than leave you disabled.
