It depends. I have spent as much as $150.00 on clothing and necessities. (all in a gift basket) But for the most part, you could spend $20.00 for a nice gift. Layette sets run about $20.00 to $30.00 for nice ones.

I say whatever you can afford at the time...or get two or three people to go in together and get something big, stoller, car seat, playpen, etc.
