One of the main reasons people were singing his praises was the tired old excuse of "he's standing up to George Bush". Well so effing what! This guy has all the makings of a dictator, such as:
1. Shutting down the opposition voice, i.e. closing radio and tv stations -- no more freedom of speech in Venezuela
2. Heavy arms purchases from Russia, including 100,000 AK-47's, 24 fighter jets, and some submarines
3. Sequestering private land to which the government has no right and distributing it to the poor
4. Trying to rework the constitution for unlimited terms

I have a friend visiting Venezuela from peru right now, and she says that people there are afraid to speak out about him. Every Venezuelan I talk to her in the States can't stand the guy. How funny it would be if he invites his new Russian of Chinese friends to set up military bases in Venezuela, then comes running to the U.S. for help when his guests overstay their welcome (i.e. annex Venezuelan territory)

I agree with the first two 100%. Yes Bush has screwed up beyond recognition but that doesn't mean people should just latch onto the first leftist dictator that resorts to name calling. That would be like if the world decided to support Adolf Hitler because Neville Chamberlain was an idiot.

Also, the whole "Mr. Danger" speech at the U.N. made him look like a complete idiot. You don't disrespect the U.N. that way -- could you imagine Vladimir Putin doing that? No, because Mr. Putin is a statesman.

I never saw El Presidente Chavez as a "Hero" !! I saw him for what he was... a leftist / socialist who is a butt-buddy with Castro, China, & Iran.

Now Bushie isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but I'd like to take his USA supporters and ask THEM to go live in Venezuela for a few years... and then report on how bad President Bush's quote intrusions on civil-liberties unquote REALLY are.

Oh you forgot in your 4 point list that he made the Venezualan Parliment unable to counter ANYTHING he does.

once you take the people out of a dictator regime, funny how they all hate the dictator. look at the cubans in florida, and south americans who migrate to the U.S. while they're under the gun, they act like it's good. no human being likes to be controlled by authoritarian politics. if they do, there is something wrong with them. so yes, chavez is a crappy leader.

Only liberal zealots. The true democrats and republicans don't. Personally I think Hugo needs to have an accident.

Standing up to Bush? You can't stand up to anyone from thousands of miles away. He's a wuss and most people know it.

You got a star from me.

Chavez and Bush are both idiots. We should put them on a desert island someplace and let them fight it out.
