OK, so it doesn't have to be that romantic. We are staying in SanFrancisco for our honeymoon for three days and would also like to spend two or three nights on the beach. It's hard to tell from the websites...can you help?

It's very hard to find anything "inexpensive on the beach" during the summer. It's just not going to happen. On top of that, there are not many beach front hotels in Santa Cruz anyway.

Try the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel, it's pricey but probably the only one that fits your requirements otherwise. Try looking just south of Santa Cruz in the towns of Capitola, Soquel and Aptos. You are much more likely to find what you want and you will only be 10 minutes from Santa Cruz.

There's no such thing as cheap in Santa Cruz! It is phenomenally expensive to stay there. The West Coast Hotel (that might not be its hole name ...) is right on the water near Main Beach and the Boardwalk. It's luxurious and pretty expensive. Right next door to it is the Sea and Sand Inn. It's romantic and nice as well, but still quite expensive. If you want something cheaper you may want to look at places near downtown or at least a mile or so inland ... unfortunately you'll still find that they're super expensive. So ... my best suggestions to you are (1) Don't stay in Santa Cruz overnight, just do a day trip. It's only 25 minutes from San Jose, 40 minutes from Monterey/Carmel, and about an hour and a half from San Francisco. (2) If you want to stay near the beach, I would suggest searching up the north coast instead of in the Monterey Bay, because you'll find better deals and it's still totally gorgeous and fun. (3) If you're searching online for places to stay in Santa Cruz, expand your search to include Capitola, Soquel, Aptos, and Scotts Valley. All are tiny towns that are close to Santa Cruz and the beach. Good luck!

The Comfort Inn, 314 Riverside Avenue, 95060. Beautiful place right by the beach. Not too pricey. Between $170 to $250 depending on the amenities. Congrats and have a great time.
