One of the things that would make your PC run slower than it can run is the graphics demands of using Windows XP, assuming that that's what you're using. If you're the type of person who prefers running a faster computer than having more pleasant Windows graphics, you can configure Windows by:
1. Click Start
2. Go to Control Panel
3. Click System
4. Go to the Advanced tab
5. Click Settings located at the Performance box
6. Under the Visual Effects tab, choose the Adjust for best performance button
7. Click OK
By default the Visual Effects settings is Let Windows decide..
Hope this helps

If your PC is slowing down, or is acting strangely, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".
Then, you need to install: ONE Anti-virus (delete others, I use AVG free), ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm), and these 5 Anti-spyware tools: Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster and cCleaner.
I use all regularly. Google for them, install them and learn how to use them (HINT: Use the Help TAB).
TIP: The apps above can only clean up so much.
As a last resort, back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) and do a Windows "Clean Install" (for instructions go to: (www.theeldergeek.com).
Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual.

Viruses, Trogans, Spyware, Adware, even installed programs.
If you have too much stuff installed on your PC, it can slow down the PC; even if you uninstall it. You see, when you install a program, a lot of the files are copied as .dll files that are put in the root of your system files. When you go to uninstall the program, those .dll files can't and won't be deleted.
My advice - Clean up your computer, do some virus scans, and defrag your hard drive a bit. Of course, the best way to speed up a computer is to re-format it.

Too many programs running. Close unnecessary programs.
Spyware. Use a spyware tool to remove spyware.
Viruses. Use antivirus software to remove.
Also, defrag your hard drive and do a disk cleanup.

The most common cause is malware running on your computer and using your resources. Download Adaware and Spybot S&D and run both (separately). Running a virus scan is also a good idea.
