It's the beginning of overturning ''affirmative action'', which is a hot button, divisive issue between the two parties.
As a rarity, I am a Dem who DESPISES affirmative action, and am pleased at the SCOTUS ruling.

The first answerer got it right. additionally, because of Brown, several 'scared' whites left the cities and went to the suburbs, puilling money away from the cities. That had a 'de facto' segregation effect. THAT is what we are trying to avoid. I too wwant to believe in the best of humans, and people are color blind, etc...but history has simply proven otherwise. I also don;t think that the SCOTUS should overturn something that the majority of the people have voted on, in their district. THEY fund the schools, not the federal gov't. Just my opinion.

Because it flies in the face of Brown vs. The Board of Education which essentially desegregated schools to try and ensure that there was equality in education for all as well as the federal " No Child Left Behind" law which was passed in 2002 which demands that schools reduce learning gaps between racial groups.
In the attempt to create diversity in schools as well as funding, school districts were trying to "mix"ethinicities to counteract the continued reality that " white" schools got better teachers and funding than those that catered to the minorities. The Supreme Court took away a key tool for achieving that goal.
This ruling will probably get back to the neighborhood schools that would be the " minority" schools which are usually in poor neighborhoods and underfunded and the so called " white" schools which exist in middle class to affluent neighborhoods which would be better funded. it might not be as bad as it was during the time which brought about Brown vs. Board of Education since there are some middle class and upper class minorities but they don't want to back slide back to the days that started this whole desegregation push.
