How long does it take to go from Amsterdam to Greece by train and then from Greece to Salzburg?

My sons and I leave Amsterdam Aug.8 and must be in Salzburg for a music festival that begins Aug. 15. We want to visit Greece and would like info. on travel time and where to stay and visit. The hostels in Athens all sound dirty and dangerous. My sons are 15 and 17. Also, when we leave Greece can we return by going North thru Italy? Are there ferries that cross from Greece into South Italy? Safe? Cost? Thank You, our weak dollar is making our travel very expensive!

Why not go from Amsterdam to Saltzburg and then to Greece? Less travelling. There are ferries from Athens to Brindisi on the south coast of Italy.

Look up Eurail Select/Saver Passes for groups, and get a 5- country select pass: Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece
and Netherlands (Benelxu).
It's $447 US$ for adult, and $343 for the teens each.
You can take a night train from Amsterdam to Northern Italy and spend a night, like in Verona or Venice or Bologna or Florence. next day train to Ancona, then ferry overnight to Greece.
They also have ferries from Venice to Greece, but you'd have to pay for it separate.
The ferry from Ancona to Greece it's only a surcharge and taxes with the Eurail passes, only with "Superfast" and "Blue Line" ferries. you'd also have to pay extra, but get a discount for beds/couchettes in the trains and ferries.

Fly ryanair.com from Eindhoven (bus from Amsterdam to airport....Look up "Eindhoven airport transport" online)
You can fly to Rome or Pisa very cheap!!! Then spend a night, next day train to Ancona, and ferry to Greece.

They fly from Cologne, Germany (about 3 hrs. train from AMS) to Greece. Then a ferry/train paid separately from Greece up through Italy to Salzburg would be cheaper than the Eurail passes if you fly down.

If you fly to Italy and take ferry from Ancona to Greece, then back to Italy up to Austria, Compare a 3 country eurail saverpass with Greece, Italy and Austria and do the math.

I think it's a ruch to do everything by train, so take one flight and overland the other way.
