I know it's a college town in the beautiful VA mountians. Is it pretty liberal, and LBGT friendly? How much culture is there? I'm from a big city and I don't want too much of a shock.

What DEATH said, she's totally right.

I hated Virginia, I was shot by klansmen for being gay. Yes, the klan is alive and very active down in redneck Virginia.
Don't go. Just say no, and go somewhere else.

Never been there so can't advise directly. But great idea to ask here.
Stay with the gay friendly Towns & Cities. Thier tolerant attitudes attract more economic activity. Most forward thinking corporations want to locate head offices where they can attract the brightest and best. If thier most valuable people can not feel welcomed in the community they will vote with their feet.

COMPLETE CULTURE SHOCK!!

It's two and a half hours from the nearest big city, D.C.
It's in the "LuRay Valley" (famous for their caves and caverns) of Virginia...and it's really fairly Redneck!

I lived near there for two and a half years and couldn't wait to get out.

The people are friendly, but they're so backwards.

I was less than an hour from there in Winchester, VA (Patsy Cline's hometown) and thought I was going crazy.
My husbands family was all from Harrisburg and New Market. O....M.....G....

Honey, if you're from the city and from anywhere more sophisicated than say "The Simpson's..Springfield"...you're in for one heck of a culture shock!
