I have a last name that people like to say. So, almost everyone refers to me by my last name. I think its cool.

Hi
Its when we try to follow a very formal approach. This usually happens in Business people. To show our respect to each other they call each other by Surname. At the end they are trying to showing respect to the whole faimly.
We do not call Surname of our realitives or who has the same Surname coz its derived that we are from a same faimly.
Usually calling the first name outside the faimly or friend circle is considered to be an offence.
Thus it shows that wot ever actions we do our whole elders and faimly is considered to be with that act.
hope this will help.

I'm 21 and get referred to by my last name, and I still call others by their last name sometimes.
I think it comes from being at school where there are a number of people with the same first name, but rarely the same last name.
And i suppose it's only like saying Mr. suchandsuch but without the Mr.

I used to do that myself. I'd call people by their last names and was often called by my last name. It never bothered me. Now I prefer to use first names, or nicknames on occasion. I don't really know reasons for any of it. That's just what was right for me at the time.

Men refer to other men in the workplace by the last name for professional reasons. The last name infers respect for that person, but in a prefessional manner...not a casual or familiar tone.

Where I'm from they do it because the first name may be very common like Jose or Juan and they use the last name to differentiate who they are talking to.

I do it out of habit from being associated with the military for a dozen years. Nobody uses first names.

A lot of men pick that up in the Armed Forces, or on sports teams.

I think that behavior starts in childhood due to pro athletes last names being on their "uniforms". I noticed my friends started doing that in grade school. Other men started doing it from military service as that is what you are called (among other things) from day one in boot camp
