I plan on buying an xbox 360 but I want to play on LIVE, so I need to somehow get an ethernet cable to my 360, but the modem that i have only has one ethernet port. Could i use an ethernet adapter

to split the one cable coming from my modem and plug one cable into my computer and the other into my 360, and still have enough speed to access the internet and play games (at the same time; can i play videogames online on my 360 while my brother plays videogames online on my pc)?

Actually, i just remembered (stupid me) that i have a wireless router for my family's laptops. It has multiple ethernet ports on the back. Could I use that to give my 360 access to the internet by plugging one end into the wireless router and the other into the 360?

You need a router with a built in network switch.

Connect the cable that you now connect to your computer to the WAN port of the router. Connect a similar cable between one of the router's ethernet ports and your computer, and another between another of the router's ethernet ports and your xbox.

Your home network would differ slightly in that the Linksys router from the link above combines the router and the network hub shown in the picture. The link above also has a great deal of information with regard to configuration of home networks.

Now, once everything is connected, you will have to configure the router to recognize the modem. Most modern routers (including the one I showed you above) have a web browser interface for configuration. The documentation which accompanies the router will walk you through how to do that. Linksys also provides a CD which will attempt to auto-configure the router.

Other brands of routers (for home use) with similar configuration options include Netgear, D-Link, US Robotics, SMC, and 3Com. Keep in mind, higher price does not mean better unit.

The best thing to do would be to buy a Router and then plug the modem into the WAN port and then the XBox and PC into LAN ports on the router.
