I was raised in a protestant family. They have nothing against symbols or paintings or statues, etc. They simply don't condone the worship of such idols, which as you have said the Roman Catholic Church doesn't either. Crosses are everywhere, they are no different, just a bit more understated. The issue is with the denominations themselves. They breed enmity, contempt, and misunderstanding. My family is remarkably religious, so I observed a great deal. To be honest the different 'denominations' agree more than disagree, they simply argue with each other about terminology and the illusions that each holds regarding another. It's idiotic. That said, I realize you are probably referring to the more radical protestants, I'm just saying that generalizations are perilous. For instance, I bet you never though to receive such a well-reasoned response from an atheist.

My daughter, my dogs my sister, my most loved family members, and my dead family members. I have those pictures to remind me that I love them.

What I picture in my mind is sunset over the Pacific at Big Sur. It's the place (in my mind) I go when things are stressful, and I always find comfort in that vision.

I have big wall hangings, naturalist art and big realism paintings as well. But not one family picture. Sadly I suspect that's because these so called family members never maintain a positive influence in my life.

I have pictures up of my best friend's kids, my future nephews, me and my fiance, and my mom and her mom on my mom's wedding day.

Yup, pictures tell stories. There's a song by a band called Soundevice, "Pictures" -- "Pictures always tell a story, memories tucked away....."
