Widescreens have less area for the same screens size (diagonal measurement)
Most applications are orientated around taller screens. Word etc. are orientated around portrait orientated paper, so a regular screen means that you scroll less.
If you are going to watch a movie on there then a widescreen will fill the screen with the movie better. and the image will be larger (Small black bands top and bottom as opposed to big black bands) Assuming it is a widescreen movie. Casablanca, for example, is full frame and will fill the screen better on a regular monitor.
Games that support widescreen look better. Your vision is more horizontally orientated, so you are getting more useful information.
I would probably get widescreen for the movie playback, but it really depends on what you use it for the most. There is not really compelling reason to go one way or the other.

I have a regular because that's what I've always used. It's just a matter of preference. It's like asking which DVD format is better wide screen or full screen. Each has its advantages.

better how - ?
if you plan to watch movies - i would go for the wide-screen - otherwise I'd just get the regular size
me personally - I watch movies on my 50" plasma screen - so I use two 19" LCDs for my computer

It all depends on what you're using it for
if you plan on watching movies on your computer (wide screen format) than go with the the wide screen monitor
I have two wide screen ones myself but that's only because I like to waste money! LOL

Unless you plan to use it mostly for watching widescreen movies, a regular one is by far the more practical choice
I've gotten two of these for our office in the last month, and they're the best deal I've seen (Newegg is also a great company). So this would be my recommendation:
