Advertising is to blame for the rampant consumerism in this country, which causes so many people to overspend and often end up in bankruptcy. We don't "need" half the stuff we buy, but TV commercials, print advertising, and other media forms are very persuasive. Now advertisers begin their assaults on young children, turning them into "consumer junkies" before they're out of diapers. While some will argue that advertising is what keeps our economy strong, I believe advertising has become far too overwhelming a power in our society. We've become way too materialistic, wanting everything from all the plastic junk we buy at WalMart for "low prices - everyday" to new cars, sex videos, computer gadgets and pricey clothes. Look at the stir the new iPhone has caused - how many buyers really "need' that $600 'toy'?? -RKO- 06/29/07
