I live in the Med in a country which does not have a smoking ban and smoking is widely accepted everywhere and by most people. when I visit Spain, which is very nearby there is a smoking ban. But, bars and restaurants may choose whether to operate a smoking ban or not. Therefore, there is freedom of choice for both smokers and non-smokers.

Like many things in the UK i think it is too politically correct and infringes peoples right to choose.

Its nothing new. Guernsey where I live enforced the smoking ban 6 months ago. Our island has been smoke free is all public areas for a while now. It makes the island seem a lot healthier and less teenagers and kids are now smoking because of it.

I personally am so happy that this law was passed. Even tho I used to smoke a packet a day.

I don't smoke - never have; however, I think it's discrimination to ban smokers from public places such as bars, restaurants, etc. where many patrons want to smoke and have a drink. It's a matter of choice whether customers and employees want to go into those places or not. In other kinds of workplaces (offices, etc.) I understand and agree with a smoking bank, but many bar patrons (and bar employees) are smokers, and if they choose to smoke, it should be a matter of the establishment deciding to be smoke-free or not.
If smoking is such a terrible health risk, then why doesn't the government ban the manufacture, distribution, and sale of cigarettes? Could it be because they don't want to give up all that juicy tax revenue they earn from the cigarette industry?? -RKO- 06/29/07

How long before the cries of " I can't even walk down a street without having to walk past groups of people all smoking"? Think on you non-smokers..... this is what you all wanted soooo badly. Smokers will continue their habit wherever they can, if that is out on the pavements then so be it. Non smokers will probably be subjected to more smoke than ever now, before they had a choice of going into a bar etc.. the same can't always be said about having to walk a certain route laden with smokers now banned from smoking inside.

Me too. If people cant have a smoke between pubs or in the comfortable, warm outdoor areas there is something seriously wrong with them.

I do however, feel that England doesn't cope well with change. The ban has been imposed for a while in S.Ireland (Scotland?) now and since April in N.Ireland & Wales. Why does England have to make a big deal out of everything. Peoples health will not deteriorate so quickly and our clothes will smell better. Hurray for JULY!!!!

It's great for non smokers, but essentially it is an attack on the rights of a minority.

If that minority had any ethnicity attached to it then the ban would never have happened.

I personally don't care one way or the other, but beware - tobacco smoke hides may other smells that may just become a lot more apparent after sunday - like farts, B.O. and the pub toilets.

Well, My dad died of the smoke effect at the age of 54.

I like smoking ban. not sure what ban and where you are talking about, but it is good news.

I wouldn't mind smokers if there was no after affect to the non smokers of the second hand smoke. But the reality is : someone can die because of your smoking - and that's not justifiable. If you want to smoke, there should be a closed location with filters all over that location to nullify second hand smoke effect.

It's wonderful for some many reasons! I'm in the US and here we have some states that have a ban and other states that do not. I live in a state that does not have a ban (yet) but when I go over the border to the state that does, it's wonderful! You really notice so much difference. Your food is better, you don't have to shower when you come home from a club in order to pass out in bed. You can smell things! AMAZING!

As a smoker, i became very visit awaken this morning and pay attention that smoking in my motor vehicle - which I do in many cases - is now banned. No observe, no caution. My motor vehicle isn't a corporation motor vehicle, I not often have passengers (and if I do, i don't smoke) and that i don't delay my cigarettes out of my window. I even have been smoking longer than I even have been driving, and that i'm able to truly discover and gentle-weight a cigarette devoid of taking my eyes off the line - i stumble on it greater distracting attempting to alter the radio station. And in 15 years of smoking even as driving, I even have on no account as quickly as dropped a cigarette in my lap. After quite learn, notwithstanding, i chanced on that smoking isn't banned, as such - it somewhat is only against suggestion. in case you're driving dangerously, committing a driving offence or in contact in an coincidence even as smoking, then you will face a greater severe penalty. notwithstanding, smoking on your motor vehicle is seen inadvisable quite than unlawful and a contributary ingredient in case you do something incorrect. So, I shall nonetheless be thankfully lights up even as driving - this is appropriate to the sole place i'm able to smoke devoid of pissing somebody off those days.
