Well of course they would be afraid of the ocean!
You can drown from huge waves and exhaustion. You can die of thirst and hunger. The ocean is a huge place, you get sucked in, and no one will ever find you. The undertow is also very dangerous. Hm, sharks are scary. But you have a greater chance of falling out of bed and dying then being eaten by a shark. =)
We fear sharks, because we see scary movies like JAWS. Pop culture has embedded that phobia into us. If you think about it logically though, sharkaphobia is the smallest fear that can happen when you are lost at sea.

The real reason why people are scared of the sea is not directly because of the creatures in it but simply the sea is not their home and its environment is something not familiar to them. It's just like living to the other country with very small knowledge with its totality. It's just a matter of exposing yourself to the area, the more knowledgeable you are, the bigger the chances of embracing the area and soon you just realize you can no longer leave the area because it is now your home!

Yes, people would still be afraid of the sea. More people drown in it or get stung by jellyfish or stingrays than people getting attacked my sharks anyway. Maneaters are the least of your problem when you're lost at sea.

Yep, I think people would still be afraid. There are about 380 species of sharks, and only 40 of those are dangerous. However, there are LOTS of other dangerous animals in the water, and besides, people have a natural fear of the unknown, and when you can't see what's beneath you, it can freak you out.

I think that there would be a lot of people who weren't scared, or at least a lot less scared! But, I also think that a vast majority of people would still be frightened of it, especially the bodies of water that are not clear (aka: not the Caribbean). It's scary submerging yourself into something that is so large and unknown.

Even though it may/may not contain man-eaters, people would still be scared....esp. if they have "hydrophobia". And some are scared of the marine animals out there.

When a tsunami is heading right towards you, the cause of your fear is something else besides sharks.
