I've noticed that I'm like the only one in my class that doesn't use all my fingers to type. I find it more comfortable when I just use my index fingers. I just can't type with them all. My friend says it's something to do with one side of my brain lol. Does anybody know why I'm like this?

To feel comfortable writing with all fingers, it requires a lot of practice. It's sort of like dancing or riding a bicyle. At first it's uncomfortable because you have to pay close attention to everything, but when all the moves are correctly stored in your brain, you can do it in your sleep.

In my school, we had to take a compulsory typewriter class. Pretty much everyone had the same problem like you in the beginning, and it only got better after two or three months of practicing.

If you want to learn how to type faster, take a class or there are self-teaching books/CDs on the market.

Some people are wired like you. And many of these people can type wickedly fast using just their index fingers.

For example, I "touch type" (home row style), and I can do up to about 80 WPM on a laptop keyboard.

My dad uses "hunt and peck" with his index fingers, and he can pull over 50 WPM on the same keyboard.

So I guess index finger typing isn't so bad after all! Just do what's most comfortable and convenient for you. As long as you do not feel pain ever, you're fine.

You just haven't had enough practice typing correctly. I used to type with my index fingers all the time, but then I tried an computer tutorial for typing and took a typing class in highschool. We had to cover the keyboard and type using all of our fingers. For the first month it was really hard and I typed really slowly, but one I got the hang of it it is much easier and faster to type with both hands (I can type around 80 words per minute now). It's tough at first to learn to type correctly, but worth it if you put the effort and practice in, it will save you lots of time on typing reports for homework.

After a few more years, more fingers will come into play. It will happen gradually, and in small ways, like your fourth finger holding down shift, your thumb pressing the space bar, that kind of thing. I have been typing a lot for 10 years and have seen all this stuff happen gradually to me. I still don't "type write" but I am more fluent at it than I used to be. Never had any training.

It's just a case of how you've learnt to type. If nobody has ever shown you to type with all your fingers you have had no need to change. It is basically conditioning whereby you type the way you know. If you want to learn to type with all your fingers, consider a touchtyping class, either online or buy a cd from somewhere like pc world. Hope this helped.

I used to type with only my index fingers... before I learned how to type. I went so fast with just two fingers and was frustrated when I had to utilize all ten. It was worth learning, though!! Now, I'm a speedster on the keyboard.

If you had taken a typing course, or used a typing program, you would have learned to use all of your fingers. You didn't practice using all of your fingers, so you don't use them. It has nothing to do with your brain. People who use all their fingers can usually type faster, but if it works for you the way it is, it's fine.

probably because you didn't learn to type with all 10 fingers from an early age, or when you first started to type.
I'm one of the only people i know who types with all 10 fingers, they usually just type with index fingers or randomly.

people don't born with the ability to type with all fingers, i had to take a class in highschool to learn typing. before that i was index fingering away on my keyboard. so don't worry, i seriously doubt it's something with your brain. just take sometime to learn and practice, in no time you will be typing away into the new century!
