Its when one computer sends 1 bit of information to the IP address of another computer and the other computer acknowledges by returning the bit. The term is derived from submarine operation. They cannot see another sub because they are under water. So they send out a single sound note called a ping, if another ship is in the area it can respond in kind or the original ping is bounced back so the sending sub knows its there.

Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. Ping works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets ("Ping?") to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies (sometimes dubbed "Pong!" as a metaphor from the Ping Pong table tennis sport.) Using interval timing and response rate, ping estimates the round-trip time (generally in milliseconds although the unit is often omitted) and rate of packet loss between hosts (can differ).

The word ping is also frequently used as a verb or noun, where it can refer directly to the round-trip time, the act of running a ping program or measuring the round-trip time.

Pinging it basically just checking to see if a particular computer is running and connected to a network or the Internet. It will also tell you how long it takes for data to be transferred.

Ping is the name of a computer network tool used on TCP/IP networks (such as the Internet). It provides a basic test of whether a particular host is operating properly and is reachable on the network from the testing host.
