Here's what the president of my college/employer just wrote:
" On Friday, June 15, Governor Rick Perry vetoed $154 million in funding allocated to community college group health insurance. The cut will take effect in the 2008-09 fiscal year and will result in a $3.8 million (approximately) reduction in state appropriations for Collin College. In his veto, Governor Perry stated that community colleges had falsified their appropriation requests submitted to the Legislative Budget Board. We absolutely take strong issue with this allegation. To date, no evidence supporting the Governor’s claim has been released. All 50 Texas community college presidents have united in making the Governor and the media aware that this action will be fiscally devastating to community college students and the economic future of Texas. "
Bottom line: this means that my paycheck which currently has over $600 in deductions for insurance will now make it over $900 per month taken out of my paycheck...

...This means, that in the county I live in, the average household earns over $73,000. My hubby and I earn under $44,000, and barely make ends meet. I’m nearly 50 yrs old, and am of a very hard age for any future new employment. With this taking effect, my take home per month will be under $850 per month. My car payment (which is needed because it accommodates my hubbys wheelchair) is over $500 per month. I will be forced to take on a third job, since I already work two!

Governor Rick Perry of Texas did NOT get my vote because of other issues: Immigration, Trans-Texas Cooridor, and the Forced immunization of our daughters. Now THIS! He is the ultimate idiot and is set out to destroy those who are already working with wages under the poverty line!
What is your spin on this guy????
What is your spin on his veto????

...What none of you understand is that the insurance continues as paid (for me) after retirement. That is why people remain working here with minimum wages. Perry is ONLY penalizing the community colleges and he refuses to show "proof" and there are no lawsuits....because it's still has to go to the house to override his veto (if possible).
Glad you're young and able to earn lots of money ahead of you. I'm in the Autumn of my earning years.

I liked Strahorn, too! Anyone but Perry, since he just rode in on the coattails of Bush, and anyone appointed I always have my doubts about their character and ability to do the job...

I live in the same county, so I know what you mean.

In what warped version of reality does Perry live that he thinks community colleges would falsify *anything* submitted to the State?

All the Legislators keep raving about the Education Fund supported by the lottery, so why not take a slice of that $3 billion and funnel the $154 million needed from there? $154M out of $3B is only 5% or 1/20 of the total amount.

*sigh*

This is why more people should have voted for Carol Strayhorn like I did--she would have been able to manage this and would never have even considered the travesty that is the Trans-Texas Corridor.
