Not sure if this qualifies as a nursery rhyme but...

I remember in the 1st grade they made us read about the old lady that swallowed a fly. I don't know why she swallowed a fly. I guess she'll die.

I was terrified of flies as a kid.

Nursery ryhmes go back hundreds of years. Many were populist ways of passing judgement on government, policies, the monarchies and dealing with the increadible losses of the plague.

Nursery rhymes provided the masses with a way to express them selves with plausible deniability, after all those were not free and democrat times, making fun of the king or church was a conspiracy or heretic activity, both punishable by death.

Apparently scaring kids then was as popular as having the TV do is today. Ever seen Harry Potter.

I read they were mother's way of releasing the anger and stress caused by a colicky or screaming baby "way back when". But yea, some are just awful!

I always thought they were evil. I use to sing to my son (he is 25 now) but back when he was young. I made up my own beautiful songs. I never sang nursery rhymes to him. When he got older he wanted to hear them. I sang them to him then and he even said they were so evil. Never could understand that.
