Hi,
In mid-August, my family will be going to Vermont, in the Burlington area. We are only going to be there for a couple days because we are hitting some other areas up there too, but I was wondering if anyone had some ideas for some fun places to go. I think we are going to go on a ferry, but we are open to other ideas. Thanks!

Burlington, with the only Socialist government in the USA, is a lovely small city, with a preserved downtown, and with 4 colleges and universities close by.

Additional to other Answerers suggestions: If you are a beer lover, Burlington is blessed by 3 or 4 brewpub restaurants (as many brewpubs as in most cities 30 times its size!). There is also a preserved and renovated theatre and concert hall - the Flynn Theater; check out what might be performing there.

The ferry is just a ferry; although the vistas of the mountains are lovely (pray it is not a hot hazy day!) they are pipsqueak to what
they are on ferries on Puget Sound and in British Columbia, and there is nothing much on the New York end.

Have you thought to try to fit in a day or at least some hours in exciting Montreal? Or at least to meander across the border and enjoy a fine Quebec French meal at a good place in one of the villages? (If interested the best closest-to-Burlington places are
in the tiny village of Dunham - center of a small wine growing area, by the way, and also with a brewpub, too - and Bedford, QC).

Hi -- I see you already have great answers; pardon me if I forget what they said and repeat some!

The ECHO Center on Lake Champlain is a very cool place for kids (environmentally-based museum/aquarium; excellent for kids; right on the lake).

I loved the ferry when I was little but my little girl found it long and tiresome.

Check out events scheduled for: Flynn Center for the Performing Arts; Vermont Mozart Festival (very cool outdoor concerts!), other concerts/fairs in the area.

Church Street Marketplace: Great shops and cafes. I love Sweetwaters.

Sheburne Museum is amazing; just south of Burlington. Huge, hundreds (?) of acres to stroll around, go into many buildings.

College-bound kids? Peek at UVM, Champlain College, Saint Michael's College: 3 superb colleges right in the area.

Have a super time. We're glad you're coming up!

I was born in Randolph, a very small town still today. I imagine small towns may not hold much interest for you unless you enjoy the echoes of the mountains all around.
