It was okay, to tell you the truth. It was a pretty good story, but I think it got too caught up in the details to flow really well. It's a pretty classic story, but there are some twists in it that were pretty refreshing. Some of it was frankly stale.
But as the series goes on, the author's writing style is improving. From Eragon to Eldest, the style smooths out a little, but he's still in love with the tiny details of this world. Definately worth picking up at some point. And I'm definately waiting for the last book, just to see what he does with the characters. I'll be interested in any other series he might write, too. As he gets older, he can only improve.
And, yes, it's better than the movie. ;)

Eragon was ok but it was nothing spectacular. If you have read any other fantasy books, you will find all those ideas incorporated in this book. No new takes on anything and the next book "The Eldest" is down right painful to get through because of this. Not a big fan.

Eragon was a good read, not a great one but nonetheless good. It was Christopher Paolini's first book. The second of the tale, Eldest, was much better defined and show's promise that the third book will be great. The Story of a Dragon master and his Dragon is not a new one but his vision is refreshing. Thinking that he's still a kid and writing novels is mind boggling.

I was frankly unimpressed. It wasn't bad, but certainly not up to the hype.
If you want a good kid-and-his-dragon tale, you're better off with Anne McCaffrey, and if you want an epic kid-learning-near-omnipotent-magic tale, you're better off with David Eddings. Too much of Eragon reminded me of plotlines of these two authors jumbled together, with worse writing.
Nothing on the level of plagurism, but just a vague familiarity with a superior version of the product.
