My friend from Scotland says things that I have absolutely no clue what they are? I just can't understand how such a small country has such a wealth of incomprehensible slang?

I have ADD so I find I do this all the time. But I do it out of getting lost in the conversation. My mind sometimes needs a split second break when someone is going on about something. Like a self check to say “are you (meaning me) really getting this? Back up, review, move on.” Because I really do want to know what’s going on, but I feel rude breaking up the conversation; so I will smile and nod like I got all the information………. but I really didn’t.

Nevermind problems with accents, I do that every time I ask for directions. If the person says anything (even in perfect English) beyond, "It's right over there....;" I completely zone out, but nod and smile all the while saying to myself, "I have NO idea what he's talking about."

My boyfriend talks about his job a lot. I understand his job but do not understand some of the complicated parts of it which he will go into great detail sometimes. I have gone from nodding and smiling to just giving a blank stare when he rattles on and on .

The same thing happend to me when I initially spoke with a Scottish guy at work. He was cute, so I had a lot to smile about. He must have thought I was crazy. He wasn't wrong.

Oh yes, I can relate. I had a Scottish friend who asked me if I knew where she could get a zipper replaced on her suitcase. I told her there was a little shop on Main street, and she asked me what sounded like "meaning what?" I furrowed my brow puzzling over why she couldn't understand what I had said, and we went around in circles until her husband asked me for the cross street. ( Main and what?)

I especially do that when were talking around loud music. I will catch bits of what the person is speaking, and whether I understand it or not... *nod* *smile* ;-)
