That's a very hypothetical question that to my knowledge, no scientists have ever concerned themselves with - even should the universe ever contract, Earth (and with it life thereon) will be long gone by then.
Anyways, to a hypothetical observer, if the universe starts to contract, initially, there'll only be scientific evidence (blue shift all around the cosmos) - for a time frame depending on the speed of contraction, likely to measure in the billions of years.
The next step would be a brightening of the sky background noticeable in telescopes. Eventually, this will become visible to the naked eye. By then, chaos should abound at a cosmic scale as supermassive balck holes start merging, all galaxies get disrupted etc. Definitely spectacular, at least from a scientific point of view.
Eventually - and this is exceedingly hypothetical because we really wouldn't presume any observers anywhere in te universe to still be alive - the universe should be dense enough for the warping of space iself to become in some way "visible", but this is where I get off - if anyone can really explain that, it'd have to be someone pretty devoted to the highly theoretical field of differential geometry.

Put a car and a dish washer some dirt an rock and a cat or dog into a compactor and start it up, you will see what would happen to the life on Earth.
Step on a bug, what is the out come?
But the universe isn't collapsing like they forst thought, it is speeding up, you ask your self, where are we going?
Set back and think, where is the end of the universe at?

Well it wouldn't look like anything because we would be dead because Earth will boil and all life as we know it will dissapear.
It would probably last a feow seconds, it would be realey messy!

It will take so long to happen, when it starts, that you will not see any change in your lifetime.
