It's basically racism disguised as a joke. The English invaded Ireland in the 1100's and by 1603 had take it over entirely. They then attempted to suppress the Irish for the next 300 years. They're free now (not all of Ireland), but the popularity of Irish bashing is only slowly diminishing, now that they've been able to hold their own in the European Union.

Look, jokes like that always have to have a target, I'm sure that IN Ireland itself, similar jokes are made with the Englishman being the butt of the joke.

In Australia, the Tasmanians are the target, in the US the Appalachians seem to be the target, and I bet in Scotland again the English are the target.

It's just what happens, everyone has to feel superior to someone else, don't get all PC about it, I'm pretty sure most countries get some version of jokes made about them.

I wouldn't say that's really true. There are lots of those jokes that end with the Scottish and the Irish telling the joke. It just depends on where it originated. If its from South England, it's Irish. Northern England, Scottish. Scotland, England. Ireland, England. It's just most of the ones that filter out of the UK are from the major cities in the South of England.

I totally agree with debra d. For a joke to be a joke (to be funny anyway), there has to be a butt of the joke. Of course, the PC party will disagree, but that's because they had their sense of humour receptors removed at birth.

Apart from that, i can't remember the last time i heard one of these jokes. They're pretty old-fashioned now.

We Irish are confident that we have nothing to prove to anyone so we don't mind being the butt of a joke.

In England they are - In Scotland they aren't and in Ireland they aren't - PLUS the Irish have a great sense of humour and 99.99% of them can laugh at themselves along with us!
