Probably born into slavery.

"Sam Sharpe was born in Jamaica in 1801. It seems that he was raised in Montego Bay on the north coast of the island and named after his owner (Samuel Sharp, Esq), who it is said, treated him relatively kindly."

Everything I'm reading indicates that Samuel Sharpe was born into slavery in Jamaica:
"Sam Sharpe was a Creole slave who was born on Montego Bay, Jamaica in 1801." (Jamaica was active in slavery at that time, so logically, any black person born there would be born into slavery).
"Sam Sharpe was a slave throughout his life, though he had been allowed to become a well-educated Baptist deacon."
