My sterndrive Mercruiser is hard to start when cold. It turns over Ok but is reluctant to fire. On many occasions I end up with a dead battery.

Remove the "Spark Arrestor" (Air Filter) and see if your Choke is working. May need to spray it with some Carb Cleaner and a little WD-40.
Make sure your battery is up to par and not going dead on you (Age).
As mentioned, Fuel, Fire and Compression what make it go. If, the fuel is fresh and you have spark and good compression it should start. Also check your Timing, but, that really should be OK unless the boat have a whole lot of hours on it. Also, check the Distributor Cap, it may have a crack.

the two main causes of starting problems are fuel and ignition. the fuel pump or contaminated fuel( a common problem if your fuel contains ethanol), filters must be checked regularly. marine stores sell additives to absorb water in the fuel. also check the distributor and plugs. it could also be low cylinder compression.
