Where did the locals of Singapore live during the Japanese occupation?

They lived in Singapore itself. The Japanese imprisoned and deported many leading Chinese, they captured the British police records but also did a lot of spying there before the invasion and had a 'hit list' of Chinese citizens, who ran the business community. the Malays were generally labourers and not a threat to the Japanese. There were frequent 'police actions' to sweep through the Chinese neighbourhoods and suppress dissent.

There are many excellent books on Singapore, I'm sure your local public library will have some.

If they were European, in internment camps. Everyone else lived where they always lived.
