The main functional advantage is that it protects walls from scuffs higher than baseboard does. The aesthetic advantage is obvious; it looks great in a home.

The main advantage is when you have people over they all go "ooh look you have WAINSCOTING! OH I love wainscoting almost as much as I love saying the word wainscoting!"

LOL Know what I mean? It does look nice as others have said but serves no function.

We have it, and the only advantage I've ever seen is that it keeps the wall from being scarred up by rocking chairs or recliners, since it's stronger than the drywall underneath. It hink some people just like it because it reminds them of old English manor houses. I'm actually planning on painting over it soon, because it makes the room look darker.

Wainscoting is used mainly as a decorative wall covering. However it is also used to cover up damaged or uneven drywall. As it has a harder surface than drywall, scuffs or marks from furniture are somewhat less.

This is used for a certain look/style and there is no ''advantage'' as opposed to other types of cosmetic wall covering. Its all in what you want for a ''look'' on the interior design of your home.
