When I was taking computer repair like 3 years ago lol I was taught that leaving the computer on all night will cause wear on the fans in the P.C. and leaving the computer on will be the cost of running a light bulb; however, Always cutting the computer off and on will cause the "hot/cold effect" which can cause expansion cards to gradually work there way out and etc...

That being said who has thoughts on turning on and off their computer/s? I know there are pros and cons for both, but I would like to see the opinions of others.

Take this point of view, you know that your computer is an information device. Let's compare it to a radio. Will you leave your radio on all night? Some people do and they are willing to pay the electricity bills, you know, but it boils down to why you want to leave the computer on.

Is it to be inform to the news or to have ready access to other information that you will need, then you can leave it. The New York Stock Exchange Computers, the Wall Street Journal Computers, JFK International Airport Computers, London Stock Exchange Computers, etc. are always on.

Actually, you have to decide whether you want to leave it on or not. If you have a good AC on the Computer and you can afford electricity bills then you can leave it on. Even if I had a good Air Conditioner within the vicinity of the computer, I will turn it off by eleven (11) pm and put it on by seven (7) am.

I have two computers and never turn mine off. I've never had fans wear out and if they did, I can get a new one for $10. I haven't noticed an increase in my power bill either. I have never even heard of a card coming out due to heating and cooling. They are screwed down any way. When not used, computers will only draw enough power to run the 1 or 2 LEDs that stay on. Much, much less than the power a normal light bulb draws.

It's worth it to me to be constantly connected and always downloading or accepting mail and instant messages since I hate phones and TV.

Given the fact that leaving your computer unattended for a long time usually results in power management kicking in and everything going to sleep anyway, there is probably not terribly much difference.

That said, I would turn my computer off at night for the following reasons

1. Security - if your computer is wired to the net it is vulnerable to being hacked whilst unattended
2. Power consumption - even with power off - think of the environment

Finally, ifyou activate the hibernate feature in Windows XP / Vista you can get the affect of quick turn on without actually having to have the PC on.

My hubby is an electronics engineer - we turn our pc's on in the morning and off at night - thats it, pure and simple. Least possible wear and tear to the disks etc.

At night, there's always the fire hazard to think of too.

doesnt make a difference which you do

i think the things you pointed out are a bit extreme

expansion cards cant come out cause they are clipped or screwed in and wear on fans is just one of them things that will happen over time anyway. you will probebly upgrade your pc before your fans wear out

You've already summed it up nicely.

Turn on/off once per day isn't too much, and as long as it goes to low-power mode when not in use...
