Housing costs depend on where you live. If you have the usual mortgage, with an escrow account, you will be paying your homeowners insurance and property taxes in your mortgage payments, and the mortgage company will hold the money (that's what escrow means) and pay those bills for you. I don't - I pay my own, and, since I live on land subject to flooding, I also pay for flood insurance. In my area, city residents have fire protection and garbage collection included in property taxes, but county residents pay their own separately. In our area, water includes sewer, unless one has a septic system, but in some places water and sewer are billed and paid separately. Electricity and gas, telephone and cable complete my bills, but some of my neighbors live in gated communities and have maintenance and gardening bills. I do some of my own maintenance, but I do pay plumbers, electricians, roofers, and painters when I need to, as well as a pool service for my swimming pool and a yard man for my garden. All in all, there are about a dozen checks per month.
Your results may vary.
