Tut was a pharoah from the New Kingdom, possibly either the son or brother of "The Heretic King," Akenatten (sp?). He became pharoah at a very young age, and died when he was only 18. Because he was so young, his predecessor had tried to turn Egyptian religion on its head, and his two closest advisors became pharoahs after he died, there has always been speculation that he was murdered, especially after a CT scan showed there was a hole in the base of his skull. Since then, though, it's been determined that the hole was probably caused during mummification. Tut was an avid hunter and warrior, but he also had a hereditary disease which made his bones brittle, it made driving a chariot especially dangerous. The same CT scan also showed several breaks in his right leg, and marks there which showed a recent, unhealed infection, so it was more likely that he fell from his chariot, broke his leg, and died from an infection.

King Tutankhamun was, until the discovery of his tomb, a fairly insignificant and little known king from the 18th Dynasty. Even in spite of the amazing discoveries made in his tomb we still have very little information about him. Surviving evidence indicates that he succeeded Smenkhkare and was the last of the true Amarna pharaohs. He grew up in the royal palace at Akhetaten, but during his reign power was switched away from the city of Akhetaten back to Thebes.
