Only part of our garden is secure enough for bunny to run and play at moment as we've not long moved in. As we are working on the garden at the minute, we put a gate up, so he is secure and safe at all times. If we go beyond the gate we allow him through as we can keep an eye on him, but if we dont let him through gate on his own he chews it. why does he do this and how can we stop him? He's quite a good bunny and learns really quick. We've already solved problem of him chewing all the plants.

wot i did with my rabbit is give him some twigs in his hutch. he chews becoz they need 2 keep their teeth filed down. if u put twigs in his hutch it encourages him 2 chew the twigs instead of your gate :D also if he continues doing it spray him with water from his waterbottle each time he trys to chew the gate. rabbits dont like being wet and this will teach him that goin near the gate is wrong and if he does it he will get wet. simple. luv adam

Why does he do it? He does this because he needs to chew things to file his teeth basically.

Give him lots of things to chew, by providing him with lots of things to chew he may loose interest in the gate. Some examples of chewing items?

Try this site to set you off. It has things like wood chews and other chewy treats

You could also try this site for a variety of foods and other information.

Now I am assuming that you have a baby gate type thing? If this is the case, well any gate really, what you have to do is weave or nail a piece of aluminum fly wire (from your local hardware shop). Or you could get a ark from the local pet shop or hardware store. This way your guinea pig is confined to one space. The ark is a triangle pyramid (quite long) with a place to hide and a place to chew on grass.

Good Luck:)

Rabbits need to chew. That's why he does it.

To stop it, put a little tobasco sauce or hot sauce on the gate. Rabbits don't like tasting stuff that is hot.

If he tries continuing it, get a water spray bottle and spray him with water whenever he does something he shouldn't.

Rabbits usually chew gates to sharpen their teeth and keep them filed down. Rabbits can have what is called malocclusion if they can't sharpen their teeth. Our baby gates have been chewed up by bunnies over the years. You gate needs to be sturdy enough that the chewing won't destroy it.

I used to raise Rabbits and they chew on things to wear their front teeth down. They can get very, very long if not worn down. He could be doing this just for that purpose. I am sure he wants to be with you as my rabbit used to follow me around like it was a little puppy dog. But more than likely it is trying to work away it's long front teeth, much like a cat scratching it's claws to wear them down.

Get him a run or build one. Rabbits are happy running around in a pen. I made one for my rabbit, you just need wood, a saw, some nails/screws and metal wiring that has small holes in. You would be able to find a ready made one in a garden centre.

All rodents chew, they have to. Give him something else to work on & protect the gate with wire netting or similar.
