Is your physical keyboard american (ie does it show an @ one the 2 key?) if it is then I would suggest leaving the settings alone or you will get confused about which key is which. Alternatively, buy a UK keyboard. If it is an english keyboard mapped wrong then read the answer above :~)

Click Start and then Control Panel
In Control Panel, if you are in Category View, click on Switch to Classic View
Open Regional and Language Options.
Click on the Languages and keyboard tab then change keyboards and change it to the UK option.

IF you are using XP you will probsbly need to do it different and do this:

Click Start and then Control Panel
In Control Panel, if you are in Category View, click on Switch to Classic View
Open Regional and Language Options.
Click on the Languages tab.
Under Text services and input languages, click on the Details button.
Under Installed services, click Add.
In the Add Input Language dialog box, choose the input language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME) you want to add.
Click OK twice. You should now see a language indicator in the System Tray

Hope this helps

if you go into regional and language options inside the control panel then go to the languages tab and click details, that will pull up the keyboard language and you can add the relevant language for the keyboard layout which will be the english (united kingdom)
