the playstation3 cpu is a 3.2ghz cental processing unit made by sony, toshiba and ibm
It has a PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and six accessible 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). A seventh runs in a special mode and is dedicated to aspects of the OS and security, and an eighth is disabled to improve production yields
The Graphics Processing Unit is based on the NVIDIA G70,which is equivelent to a geforce 7600 series card in a p.c
comparison between the ps3 and the home p.c chips is hard to compare,as the ps3 ""Power Processing Elements"are of different architecture to a p.c processor
however i would say the ps3 chips are of equal stature to the pentium 4 hyper threaded processors or the athlon64 4000+ cpu,s
but i still think the intel core 2 duo chips, and the quad core chips are light years ahead of the ps3,well look at it,a top end intel core 2 duo chip costs around 2 thirds of the price of a ps3,so it couldnt be sold for its rrp of £450 if it had a similar chip to the intel core 2 duo
finally, although the ps3 dosent beat the p.c in power, its by no means a bad machine, its a very good games machine and the best home multimedia games machine you can buy
good luck mate!
