Does there have to be an answer? Isn't this just a glorious cosmic accident, the one in ten trillion chance that we could evolve to fit the developing conditions on this planet. Evolve is what we have done but whether we have developed much is another question. To answer the second part of the question, you are here to survive and that is made easier if you look after your neighbour. So if you have helped anyone through life then your existence will not have been in vain. Brilliant planet isn't it? Pity about it being finite.

Wouldn’t that be a reason good enough for you to be here just to ask the very question that you have asked? Or, let us suppose you were living somewhere where your know all, what you are supposed to do and also why, then you might be an angel. The contents of human knowledge in the mind are made human only by the virtue of the questions we have, or put it the other way round it is only human to ask questions. A flower for instance, does not ask what it is, but does that make it less of a flower; a flower knows that it is a flower and what is its purpose, but no more; a flower does not have any realisation of its own knowledge, it entire being is its entire knowledge. I think, we are here to find out what is that makes us ask questions, as if we are displaced and searching our way back to our original reality while we carefully place our footsteps upon the ground under of feet, asking for directions for each other, and checking our maps and compasses ever so often.

The fact is that unlike flowers and all other things in general nature, our knowledge reaches beyond our human purpose; we know evils, for instance, while we assert and strive to be good; we aspire to align ourselves with the forces of goodness. And this is the reason we have pain and suffering. We need to know goodness better and until then we have to be progressive, we have to journey through life, life that is the path of our journey.

"it was like that when I got here"

seriously, why would I have to justify my existence? My actions or inactions I would have to justify. Why I ate meat for some years, and dairy later, why I usually did not give money to beggars, why I broke up with someone, why I went to some political protests but not to others, etc etc. Do I have good answers for all those things? I seriously doubt it, and that does worry me. But if somebody asks me "why do you exist?", I have no idea, and frankly I do not feel responsible for it. I am responsible for the things I do to ensure my continued existence, but not for the fact that I exist in the first place. It just happened to me.

We humans are the result of millions of years of evolution. The reason we are here is to reproduce. It's just a reality of being human. A side effect of all of this is that we have developed intelligence. The result of this intelligence is technology. So, we are all here to make babies and play video games... and when need arises, go to war for resources. So that we can keep making babies and playing video games.
