the capitalists put china in the position they are in as chief exporter to the u.s.. this is a mess that the republican party created when they felt that america should export everything instead putting americans to work. so blame yourself you fathead!

Any unregulated system with unreasonable demands (either for production or profit) will cause this.
It happened in America in the 20's when people were eating diseased products because it was the cheapest way to handle diseased meat. Today similiar things still happen in the meat industry because of the demand for extremely low overhead so they can amplify profits.
In China it is the same problem, but it is more of a production issue than a profit issue. When you are making that much that quickly and no one cares what youre doing (this is also quite a bit our fault since we've let them just sell us whatever they wanted for years and ignored the complaints that have come though), things are going to happen.
This is what happens when you get an entire country of people who think that things made in their own country are inferior yet refuse to do any research. It has been clear that Chinese products were crap for years, but people chose them due to the price-you get what you pay for.
As for this being a way to kill of American children, I say no. Personalyl I dont trust the Chinese gov't, and think that to a degree they are testing the waters to see what they can get away with. However, theyre also victim to two warring factions of gov't right now. Theyre not able or willing to regulate their industry. Its not that theyre trying to kill us--they just dont care. We allowed our growth and self-interest to dominate for years, many times putting it ahead of the best interest of other countries. Why do we not expect them now to do the same? If we dont bother to inspect our imports, why should we be mad that theyre not inspecting their exports?

SHOWTUNES has it right. These problems are symptomatic of an "unregulated" atmosphere as was prevalent here in the 1920s and before. Put whatever "ism" you want in place, it's the same result. Wholesale deregulation inevitably causes steps to be missed and corners to be cut for the sake of profit/ production.

I think you need to substitute Communist and Socialist for "capitalist".
Capitalists don't lose off an entire market trying to see how much poison they can put into products and get away with it to short cut production. They think LONG TERM.
This is an issue of ethics and integrity, honor and responsibility. You'll find that some things encourage those, other things don't. Socialism, doesn't.

This probably isn't new thing. We're just learning about it more now. And increasing trade with China is just amplifying old problems so we can now see old problems that were not readily noticed before.
It's not like Chinese got together one night and said 'let's kill stupid Americans with our death toothpaste.'
It doesn't work like that.
