Possible Etymology;

When out at sea the guys usually go pee off the back of the boat (Wind allowing). It easier and you can check what going on at the stern. I doubt they pooped, but, if you could hang your butt over without falling off, then maybe. So, from the "possible" etymology, it may have been given this name as someone need to pee, people joke and say, "Pee off the poop-deck".

Just a point of clarity... the term "fantail" is largely confined to the USN.
To the rest of the world, these days, it's an "afterdeck"

The traditional "poop" was a raised area aft of the helm, to afford a better view and to make room for the senior quarters housed below it.

The tradtional place for "pooping" was actually all the way at the other end of the vessel, in the forepeak heads - and we still use the term "heads" today. The reason for this location is that this area of the vessel is regulalry washed by the sea when the vessel's head dips.

No. It isn't. If you do that on a Navy ships poopdeck, you'll probably get thrown overboard by a bunch of grossed out Navy soldiers.

Nope - the term 'poop' deck comes from a long, long time ago, when sailing ships were pretty slow and ungainly (Western European ones, at least...), and, in a following sea (waves coming from behind), often got 'pooped' by a large wave rambling up from behind.
Correspondingly, naval architects increased the height of the stern to reduce this tendency, and it became known as the poop-deck.
The head was traditionally at the head of the boat, hence its name.
The stern of a boat is known as that, or the fan-tail, or the transom.

There are no poopdecks on Navy ships. They are called "fantails".

You never told us what you thought it was;)

It's a Middle English word which comes from the old French word "pupe" (modern word is poupe) meaning the stern or rear of the ship.

Its on all ships and you are right. Thats where they did it on my ship in Bangladesh. Had 400 of those guys making a stink. Had to build plank seats hanging over the side.
