It is my opinion that the world will suffocate itself because we aren't going to do enough about the air until it is too late to fix the problem.
The earth as we know it will continue to exist until the balance of nature shifts too dramatically to be rectified.
For example, in order for us to breathe well oxygenated air, plant life has to be kept growing in abundance. This is one very good reason to leave the rain forests alone, no more cutting it down. When trees and forests are lost, they should be replenished. Plants of all kinds should be abundant, even in your home. It helps the air quality.
If we can keep the air quality high, everything else has a better chance at survival.

There will be a massive impact between the earth and a stray chunk of matter that comes into our orbital path, bringing extinction to most species on Earth. It's happened several times before, so it's pretty likely to happen again, within perhaps some tens of millions of years. Humans, as we know ourselves now, will probably not still be around then, as mammalian species typically last only a few million years. However, you might rightly say that's not really the end of the world. The actual end of the Earth, probably difficult for us to recognise by then, will be when the Sun develops into a red giant in a few billion years time, at which point the Earth will be rendered down and become part of it. It's a tough outlook so let's have some fun while we can!

The last one out will turn out the lights. Disinterest, ennui, boredom, satiety, and ultimately the entropy of a collapsing universe will be the end of the world, because mankind no longer has the will to live, change and grow. In reality the world ends and begins anew countless times each day, it's all a matter of perception and commitment to the business of conscious living.

This answer might probably belong on the science side, but I will give it. John said that the world as we know it would be destroyed by fire and actually, he's right. As our sun dies, it will turn into a red giant, which will likely consume and destroy Mercury and Venus. Philosophically speaking, I believe that the world will end upon Christ's return.

Earth has given birth to Man
And Mankind's transcendent children
Will scatter through limitless space,
Growing always in wisdom and power.
And when our dying star
Turns this world to ash
It will yet endure in our children's hearts.
To be summoned back at will.

Who can say if this is the first time?

As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be...
World without end.

Overpopulation will create a world with way too many people, it is already bursting at the seams. The book Population Bomb says that some great disaster must occur under those circumstances, hopefully one that leaves a world that is not too polluted and dead.

The world, at least as we know it, will probably end in another ice age, resulting from a massive meteor or asteroid smashing into it.History shows that this has happened before and will most likely happen again.

Biblically, it will culminate with a one world system of religion and government that together will cause unparalleled death and destruction. It's called the beast( meaning one world religion/political system after the manner of ancient Rome) and will be revived in the image of the old Roman Empire. In fact, it's happening right now. When Europe fully coheres as a single political entity, it's at the front door.
It will make war with God's chosen people, and turn its sights on Israel. It will form treaties with the kings of the East who will march on Israel. When that happens, the one whom the bible calls the "Ancient of Days" will suddenly explode on the scene for all the world to see. Then it gets nasty for all those who hated Him and killed His people. Real nasty.

according to science... it will end when the sun blows up in a few billion years from now. Unless you are referring to life on Earth!... and that can happen at any time.
