No, only the rodents are chinchillas, the rabbits with the chinchilla name only refers to their coat. It is like a chinchilla. When you blow on the fur, you will see a bluish undercoat. But it is a rabbit and nothing else.

I had a French Lop with chinchilla coat. Very pretty.

Moderateprofessor is pretty much right. There is an animal that is called a chinchilla. It has a tail about the length of a squirrel and has a grey and black coat.

In rabbits in the United States, there are three rabbit breeds that are called chinchillas. The distinguishing factors between the three breeds are their difference in size. There is the Standard Chinchilla (the smallest), the American Chinchilla (the middle size), and the Giant Chinchilla. They are called chinchilla rabbits because their coats look similar to a chinchilla animal's coat. There are also some other breeds of rabbits that have varieties or colors of their breed that are chinchilla, meaning that is one of several recognized colors or varieties in the breed. The three rabbit breeds I mentioned, that is their only breed color.

No, all chinchillas are rodents and all rabbits are lagamorphs. Chinchillas and rabbits aren't related in anyway. I hope I cleared that up for you =]
