Check your desktop and hard drive. Take off any programs you really don't need or you don't use anymore and forgot to uninstall. See if that makes your pc start faster.

Hi. I tend to use ccleaner (this clears the cache). Also some freebies: Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Spybot Search & Destroy. I found these two from a website called moneysavingexpert.com. It has a search box. Put a key word in it such as "spyware" and find more free stuff for your comp.
*EVEN BETTER IS THE FOLLOWING LINK*
INSIDE SECRETS TO SPEEDING UP YOUR COMPUTER:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10165_7-5554402-1.html
It also has a video that talks through some of it.
I found this by doing a search in Google, with the following query:
speed up pc manually
I hope this is of some help to you. If none of the above works for you, then you might need to reinstall your operating system.

Free Online Virus & Spyware Scans
Kaspersky Online Web Scanner
Trend Micro Online Spyware Scan
PandaActiveScan Online Scanner
F-Secure Online Virus Scanner
Trend Micro HouseCall
Trend Micro (Europe) (Java)
eTrust Web Scanner
Command On Demand
Try any of the above, DO NOT INSTALL ANOTHER ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM ON YOUR COMPUTER AS IT WILL PROBABLEY CONFLICT WITH NORTON AND CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS.
The above are FREE online scanners.
Use any one of them, they will defenatley detect a virus or malware/spyware etc...
Hope that heps you.

A number of thing can slow a PC.
Less memory because
1>You have games installed and these uses up a lot of the memory bank.
2>Too many programs or files opened at the one time.
3>Files are damaged. Run the clean up wizard and run disk defragmenter. All programs>>Accessories>>System tools>>Cleans up wizard and then disk defragmenter. When you go to disk defragmenter the more red line the more files that are damaged. Clean up your PC and you should be alright.

Do you have all the updates to your antivirus program?
Also, you might want a second one such as AVG, to snag anything that gets past Norton.
There are two more things to check: Run a defrag on your computer. Sometimes fragmented files can cause severe lag. And get an anti-spyware program, if you haven't already.
Good luck!

Might not be a virus; Norton is pretty good after all.
Do a disc clean-up, defragment and run ad-aware and spybot.
Run msconfig and uncheck unwanted startup items.
That's all I know, but it will help.
If you don't know what all these things are, ask around; they are common and not esoteric. Or ask back here.

Norton is a resources hog, so actually Norton could be part of your problem.

Perhaps you just need more RAM, or try clearing out some of the applications you may no longer be using.
