I'm assuming you have something for it to climb to. When I got my home there was already one growing without a trellis. I put one up and tied the flower to it to help it grow.

The roots are shaded. They were covered by leaves, and now they are covered by a sweet pea that is growing in front of it. Mine is planted where it is in full sun from first thing in the morning til around 2:30. Hope this helps!
