First of all...yes the Bible does mention slavery. It was a way of life back then. Slaves at that time we as common as household cats for people to have.

Most of this is Old Testament, and not when Christ himself was teaching. But yes the Bible does say that one can own slaves, slaves are good to have, and that you can beat your slave as long as the slave does not die withing 24 hours, etc. etc. Slaves are mentioned throughout the Bibles...in Genesis, Exodus, Kings I, Kings II, Isaiah...etc. The original 7 deadly sins (depending on which version of the Bible you read) states "Thou shalt not covet your neighbors wife, or female slave, or male slave..." etc.

It's not pretty...and it isn't taught in SUnday School...it is there. I would suggest you meet with your pastor, minister or priest or start studying the Bible yourself.

Also, however, remember, the Bible has been interpreted and rewritten hundreds of times over thousands of years. (Ever play round robin...where you start a secret in a large group of people and by the time it goes all the way around the group, it's nothing like the way it started?

The words we read as the Bible today may not necessarily be the exact words the apostles wrote. (The spoke Latin, Aramaic and Hebrew...not english...) And there are people that say that for instance the King James Version was written, edited and censored by a staff working for Kig James of England...

Anyway, I hope you get my drift here. Just because the Bible says it, doesn't really mean that it is what Jesus or any of the apostles condoned.

Christ died for all, not just one race. Because, think about it, if one person on the Earth wouldn't have been able to recieve Salvation, then Jesus's sacrifice would have been meaningless.
Maybe did you Atheist friend mean that we are slaves to sin? Because we kind of are "slaves to sin" before we recieve Salvation.
Pray about it, and if you have team go through the books of the new Testament and see what Jesus did say (in most Bibles what he said is written in red, so you could skim the pages)
Best of luck
PS And you can't be half Christian, or be a Christian and then not be. Being a Christian mean that you have been saved. Nothing that you can ever do can make you loose your salvation. However, bear in mind that once you are saved, you usually want to act in a Christ like way because you don't want to hurt your realationship with the Lord. But, everyone messus up once in a while. Remember "Walking in a shawdow every now and then is not walking in darkness."

People will always have different opinions on who they think Jesus was. No matter how many people talk about the good he's done. Don't believe anything you hear. Don't believe anything you read. Instead, research it. Look for books on this subject. Read stuff by believers and non believers. Decide for yourself after reading those books, if what you heard is true. That's the only way you'll know the truth, and understand it. No one else can tell you what to believe but you. Always remember that.

I have no doubt that your friend truly believed what he said. He may even be able to find the biblical passages that prove his point. The fact is, that if you want to believe something strongly enough, you'll be able to find a passage that is vague enough so that, out of context, it can be made to sound as though it supports your position. That's the way it's written. That's why belief in it is an act of faith. If the Bible were filled with incontrovertible facts, there would be no faith required. Just as there is no faith required to accept that from now until you die, you will ingest oxygen.

This is excellent to see Christians stand up for their faith and what they believe in!! There is no way in heaven or earth that God approved slavery of a certain race, that is the biggest pile of rubbish I have ever heard of!!

God love everyone equally. Maybe some churches teach the slavery thing, but I know that it isn't true. Jesus would never approve of slavery, he loves all people!
I'm Christian too!

Jesus came to set the captives free we are told. When you accept Christ it is for you to be released from the bondage of sin and guilt and damnation! How then can the one whose Father released the children of Israel from slavery to the Egyptians promote what goes with slavery. There is no truth in what is being said about jesus promoting slavery for Black people! When God looks at us he sees us as his children who are equal..black white green or red! The problem with relying on someone else's convictions is that sooner or later you run out of steam and then what? You need to have a personal relationship with Christ and from that form your own opinions. Christ wants you to be free and happy whatever your race, color or creed.

not true at all. ask him to find any biblical basis for what he claims. he cannot. if he points to passages about slaves obeying their masters, remember the culture at the time. it involved voluntary slavery, when people became so indebted that they sold themselves into slavery to pay off their debts. it was not the slavery that we think about today (rounding up people violently and forcing them to be slaves at the threat of death or great harm). Jesus did not condone it, but it was a reality of the time. In fact, the bible cautions against debt. While it is not a "sin" to be in debt, it can cause great trouble. Amen.

the bible mentions slavery and the church used to emloy slaves before, thought not of a particular race. That was wrong and the church has apologized for its past and moved on. the bibles old testament mentions some old beliefs that include slavery but we must remember for who these words where written. to be a christian nowadays is to be tolerant and caring towards everyone, who you should love like yourself
