what do the phillies need to do to be a legit contender?

I think if they trade Howard and Hamels to the braves for a 46th round draft pick they will eliminate two H names from there roster and be in a better balanced position in the universe

They need several things. A motivating force, they have talent but too many guys that are too laid back, their manager is the same laid back kind of guy, there is no sense of urgency!
Secondly they need pitching of both types, starting and relief, going into the season they had a "great" starting rotation and a weak relief corp. Their rotation has flopped, Freddy is all-DL this year, Myers was sent to the pen and Leiber just broke down for year...again. Without pitching you compete with the Nationals for who stays out of the cellar! It will be hard to add pitching pieces mid year, the main thing they would have to have is farm system guys step up and show they are ready for the bigs, then maybe they get the average age of their relief pitchers under 60.

It always comes down to pitching. Just look at the teams that have the best chance to make the playoffs, they all have pitching. The Phillies need a solid starting pitcher to give themselves a chance, but that person will be hard to find.

There are 3 kinds of teams,
Level 1 " It's be nice if we could win."
Level 2 "Maybe we can win."
Level 3 " What do you mean, "Maybe."
The Phils are on level. 2. They need a a player who will get in the face of someone who does not produce.
They need a young Larry Bowa.

they are doing it keep winning games they have now passed the braves for second and are just a few game out of first they are starting a series with the mets today so we will find out if they are for real or not they play four games between now and the first so they need to win the series and that will let you know

They need to shut up and play ball. They have some very good ball players there.
