The usual reason an engineer would want to get an MBA would be that s/he expects to progress in her/his career, and anticipates a need for managerial skills in higher positions.

Engineering is a field common for promotions to middle and senior management. You have to be competitive enough to stand out if you want to achieve this. Guess where you stand if you don't have an MBA but three other people competing for the same job do.

The most common reason people give for enrolling into an MBA program is change. Change is accomplished by preparing for the future, opening up new options. In doing your MBA you will:

• Develop an excellent portfolio of business knowledge and skills
• Improve your personal skills, especially around communication and teamwork
• Get accustomed to working under extensive pressure
• Learn from a group of fellow students with a very diverse background
• Build your network of colleagues, MBA alumni

In doing so, you will discover that not only are you ready for change, but change is ready for in the form of a wider range of career opportunities, even while studying. By doing an MBA you will give yourself a competitive advantage.

Assess yourself based on the following questions:
Where do I stand today?
Where do I want to be in the future?
What skills are required for getting there?
Do I possess these skills?
How can an MBA help me acquire these skills?
Now read through the two scenarios given below and see if you can relate to either of them.

A. Your career goals are a continuation of your career so far, and you would like to take on bigger responsibilities after your MBA. If this is your reason for pursuing an MBA, you have to guard against projecting lack of ambition. You also need to describe as to why you can’t learn the skills at work itself? The way around the situation is to analyze your job responsibilities in detail, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and after listing the skills you will need in your future positions, try to figure out the best way to acquire the missing competencies. There would be some skills that you are likely to gain only at work, while others would be best achieved through an MBA.

b. If you are aiming to switch careers, you need to convince the admissions committee that an MBA will help you make this change. Additional skills and experiences would also be needed. Specify for how long you have kept this goal in mind. Why do you think you are a good fit for your goals? What steps have you taken so far to prepare for the change?

In each case you will first need to show that you are aware of what it takes to achieve your goals. Then, try to describe how you will benefit from an MBA. You have maximum likelihood of profiting from the program if you enter it with specific and clear objectives in mind. List those objectives while answering the Why MBA? question.

Given rapid technological change and increasingly global markets, there is an increasing need for MBA graduates who grasp the organizational and competitive possibilities enabled through and with information technology (IT). IT is now the prime driver and enabler of business strategy for many, if not most, organizations. The shear size level of investment in IT and its impact on productivity and competitiveness demonstrates the need for MBA students – whether majoring in Marketing, Finance, Management, or other disciplines – to possess skills and knowledge inherent to the field of information systems. Among many other things, this knowledge is essential to:

Recognizing new or improved technology-enabled ways to reach customers, partners and consumers
Managing information systems design, development and implementation
Choosing and assessing information systems-related investments wisely
Optimizing the benefits of technology for overall organizational gain
