Prostitution was banned in the early 1900's along with a great many other things. Part of the reason for this is at the time adultery was a crime. If you were caught in an adulterous relationship wiht anyone, even a prostitute you could go to jail for it. To make things easier on the legal system and less detrimental to the family the government opted to ban prostitution. This didnt change the fact that girls still sold sex and men still paid for it, it just changed the face of the game, made it more risky and thus more enticing. The government doesnt like prostitution because most of the working girls dont announce their income because "call girl" isnt a job recognized by the IRS. There are 2 states out of 50 in which sex trade is legal, Nevad and Rhode Island. Everywhere else its a misdeminor and very embarrassing when you get caught and have to explain to your spouse why you have to do community service. Yes, our country was run by much more religous people but those people were also more family oriented. They were doing what they could to keep the country together. Drug addiction was a big problem in the late 1800s and early 1900s before the Harrison Act in 1914. One way to make money for drugs was to prostitute yourself for money to pay for your addiction. As drug laws and prostitution laws went into effect narcotics on the streets were harder to come by and the working girls dropped off because the addiction either killed them or they went through withdrawls and got back to a normal life, or as normal as you could live before disease took you. Many working girls of the time died of STDs, and that is another reason prostitution was banned, the family minded folks running the government didnt want decent women coming down with these diseases. Ladies used to be respected back then. Today some countries actually have legalized prostitution, usually held in brothals. The girls/guys are required to have health checks frequently, are required to use condoms, and are required to have a liscence to solicit for sex. The US isnt quite that open minded yet but given our track record it shouldnt be too much longer before that law is over turned.

I'm sure the moral reason is obvious, but economically it's because people make a living out of prostitution. If you consider prostitution a job (which it would be if it were made legal), who would want to give prostitutes the same working rights every other job enjoys? They legalized prostitution in Germany not that long ago, apparently, and the brothel business is booming there now. America doesn't want that in its industry, I guess; it's a mark on a slate.
But to reiterate the obvious moral thing, prostitutes have a tendency to tempt men away from working families and tear them apart, as well as spread diseases (man goes with a prostitute, then goes home to his wife; she finds out and they get a divorce and she dates some guys and has sex with them and passes on an STD---bad domino effect). Also, prostitution is considered a sin in many religions. A woman giving herself away to more than one man is considered grotesque (though, of course, a man can give himself away to as many women as he wants in some religious teachings by text).
It's really a touchy issue. I'm glad it's illegal.

Because it steps over the perceived line mankind has drawn between selling service and selling body parts, ie: it rents out body parts held to be only allowed for private usage, for an hourly rate. This is different than renting out the musculature of one's back as the back is not considered to be a private body part. Sex as an act has historically been considered an act of private communication and reproduction between two emotionally and legally connected persons and selling this act makes it a purely physical connection which detracts from our human concept of the inherent positive value (and sacredness) of human intimacy.

prostitution is not illegal in every single country of the world. there are many places where it is legal, controlled by the government and health authorities and where the sex workers are not subject to humiliation and enslavement by pimps and other "protectors". in other countries the prostitution itself is legal but pimping and pandering is illegal.
it was made illegal in certain countries because of religious beliefs that forbid prostitution (because in the olden days prostitution was a racket run by some pagan temples and was in competition with the monotheistic religion).
it is also illegal because the govenment finds it hard to control and tax. just like marijuana.

You asked a good question, your getting a lot of feedback!!! And I have absolutely no idea why it is illegal! I cant say I agree with it but women have one night stands all the time with men and its their choice, but if they decide to have sex with someone and get paid for it?, then why cant they? Sex is nothing but a chore to most women and don't people get paid for their chore's? An east $50 for 5-10min of work? I couldn't do it myself but if someone else can than I can't judge.

People with moral standards made the original laws, and they understood that sex was for married people. It is our liberal leaners in this world that are trying to throw out basic moral standards of behavior, and with the help of the entertainment business and politicians, they are doing a good job.
It is okay to play music with cursing in public, but it is not okay to pray in public. Go figure.

In a world that needs to contain new outbreaks of diseases...... It is necessary not only to keep it illegal, but to contain it so that it doesn't spread to the unsuspecting.....
It effect the faithful, for the sake of infidelity, something that can easily be remedied if kept at home, even for a passing moment....
Who needs "luggage" when they do not expect to go anywhere.....

I couldn't agree more.
I believe that it's illegality stems from the misogynistic patriarchal aspect of this society.
Women give their bodies away all the time-they ought to get paid for it!

It usually brings in other types of crowds like drug dealers and pimps and things most cities don't want to deal with.
It's also been proven that all cities that have legallized prostitution have extreamly high crime rates compared to cities who have outlawed it.
