i'm going to be a senior this upcoming school year. As of right now i have a gpa of a 4.13 (on a 5.0 scale) and an ACT score of 24. I want have a pre-med major at the University of Illinois in Chicago or Loyola University. Now i've heard of people taking the easy way out by applying as an undecided. As far as i am concerned, what should my gpa/act score be to consider applying for a pre med major?

Also, if i apply as an undecided...how difficult is the process to change it to pre med? And how do so many people get away with it?

Not a big deal. You can apply to virtually any school as "undecided." Anyway, "premed" is not a "major."

You will have to major in bio, chem or some other discipline. You can identify yourself as 'premed' - but in many schools there is no particular formal process for this and it really is meaningless. You can't get a degree in 'premed' - all it does is put your name on a list so that you will get notices from the Health Sciences Career advisor (or whatever they call the guy) reminding you of some of the deadline dates for med school applications, MCAT tests, etc.

Med schools do not care what major you are. They care what your grades are in the courses that are prerequisite for applying to med school. And they care about your MCAT test scores.

You can get more info ( and way more accurate info than Yahoo) by checking the wesbite of the Association of American Medical Colleges AAMC online. And you can get info about premed at these colleges by reading their websites and calling the Faculty person who is listed as the premed advisor. That's what he's there for.

Good luck.

At UIC, pre-med is not a major, it is an advising path. We have pre-meds majoring from biology to bioengineering to philosophy. UIC admissions are done on the college level. The colleges make the choices not the majors.
You look to be fairly solid for both schools.
