I'm shopping around for a notebook computer and am constantly seeing the nVIDIA logo followed by a series of numbers, and an description declaring that it is the latest and greatest in 3D rendering. About an hour ago, I even saw the nVIDIA quadro... no numbers following it all!

I am not an intense gamer, but I do love to play my share. I especially am thinking of something like WoW or really any MMO, and possibly some FPS games. Can someone explain to me the number system behind nVIDIA and give me some direction as to which are good, better, and best?

As said previously an 8600, 8700, 7900, 7700 are all excellent chips. Here is a way to decipher all the other ones.

A way to decipher the numbering system from Nvidia:

It is a 4 digit number with a few letters at the end:

First number is the generation of chip usually 6,7,or 8 the higher that number, the newer the chip which means more features.

The second number is how fast that chip is in their line-up. 1=slowest in the line, 5=midrange, 9=fastest they can make it.

The third number is usually a 0 or 5. 0 for first version, 5 for newer version/update but could also refer to specialty version (like mobile).

The fourth number has always been a 0 to make it look more impressive although they could use it for another revision if they wanted to.

The last two digits are usually used to differentiate pretty much identical models where they overclocked the speed on one. Usually GS for basic and GT for faster, although I've seen GTX and GTS on their home models...both are fast so GT and S for slower and X for xtreme.

So, an Nvidia 7950 would be 7th generation, 9 so fastest in the line, 5 for revision over the 1st model. In short a really fast 7th generation (direct x9) card.

An Nvidia 8600 would be 8th generation (direct x10), 6 so just over middle of the road, 0 for 1st revision (just recently came out).

If you saw 6150 (on cheaper laptop) it would mean 6th generation (old), 1 slowest in the line, 5 updated from first version. Bad--but still better than integrated graphics

Nvidia Go 7900 GTX and 8700M GT is the best right now i believe. then the 7900 GS is 2nd..i'm using a Toshiba gaming comp. with a go 7900 gs.

This link will help you a lot.. http://www.nvidia.com/object/wtb_notebooks.html

I own this Toshiba http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/rdet.jsp?poid=360064&seg=HHO
It will play WoW easily. I play America's army on it and it runs really really smooth. Runs about 70-80 FPS. Really expensive gaming desktops run around 100-130 FPS. I recommend the toshiba. Alienware overprice all of their machines without question

To the guy below me, 8700M GT is the best not the 8600 lol. One thing he was right about is the new Direct X10, but you said your not a intense gamer so don't worry about that. Get a 7 series (7900 GS| 7900 GTX) Nvidia Laptop. They arn't as expensive as the new 8 series, which were just released last month. It will run anything

whilst you're having issues of Flash video, this has no longer something to do with your video card, and extra to do with your processor. so a strategies as video enjoying cards flow, many laptops do no longer help video enlargement. Many have "on board" video, and that they don't seem to be waiting to be uprgaded (Heck, some Dell and funds computers are that way, too). For every physique to recomend a video card, your precise computing gadget variety quantity may well be necessary, through fact no longer all motherboards help all video enjoying cards. additionally, it does not make experience to purchase a video card that would cope with two times the overall performance something of your workstation can save up with. (why placed a one thousand horse skill engine in a Ford concentration, whilst something of the vehicle could no longer cope with the skill...does that make experience?) even if, computing gadget video enjoying cards (through fact of their compact length and cooling standards) usually value double their equivilant own workstation video enjoying cards. that's recommended to attempt a decrease reveal screen decision. besides the actuality that, liquid crystal reveal's are truly in basic terms made to look stable at their "community" decision. possibly attempt dropping your colorings to sixteen-bit, from 32 bit. you will possibly do this by using acceptable-clicking on yoru own workstation, and choosing "residences." Then, choose the "placing tab." that's the place you may substitute your decision and shade settings. To make your workstation run speedier and smoother, you choose it to could technique much less suggestions, meaning a decrease decision, and decrease volume of colorings. whilst it may run speedier and smoother, it may no longer inspect stable.
